Western Beef is a low-cost supermarket chain located mostly in the New York City metropolitan area. As of 2010, the chain operated 21 stores in the city and suburbs. A store was opened in Boca Raton, Florida in March 2009. A store in Pembroke Pines, Florida was opened in 2011.

Western Beef’s business model has been to operate in ethnic, inner city neighborhoods that have been abandoned by other supermarket chains. Their store on West 14th Street, now closed, was located at the north end of the Meatpacking District, then a "derelict area clogged by trucks in the daytime and prostitutes at night”. Its motto is "We know the neighborhood”. Its logo is the words "Western Beef” with a cactus wearing a cowboy hat in place of the "t” in "Western”. The company also operates five Junior’s Food Outlet stores:[3] four in Brooklyn, and one in Queens.

The legacy of Coborn’s began in 1921 when Chester Coborn opened a single produce market on Broadway Avenue in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. Eventually, Chester added dry goods and other merchandise as he tried to meet the needs of his customers. In 1936, the company took another big step when the store added a meat market.

As time passed, the store continued to evolve, adding shopping carts and checkout lanes in the 1940s. In 1952, the store adopted the "cash and carry” concept that is prevalent in today’s marketplace. Today, Coborn’s, Inc. owns and operates 50 Coborn’s and Cash Wise Foods grocery stores in the Upper Midwest.

The first Family Fare store opened in 1966 in Hudsonville, Michigan. It was founded by Don Koop and Ron Kunnen. By the 1980s, the chain was owned by Spartan Stores (now SpartanNash), and had added locations in Holland, Byron Center, and Lowell.

In 2004, Spartan began consolidating most of its nameplates into two brands: Glen’s Markets in northern lower Michigan, and Family Fare in southern lower Michigan. This change rebranded three locations of Prevo’s Markets in Grand Rapids (which themselves had previously been known as Daane’s) to Family Fare, as well as the Great Day chain, while the rest of the Prevo’s became Glen’s.
