Aldi (Embellished as Aldi) is a joint brand of two of the world's leading discount supermarket chains with more than 10,000 stores in 18 countries, and its total sales are estimated at over 50 billion euros. Based in Germany, the series was founded by the brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946 when they took over their mother's warehouse in Essen which had been operating since 1913.

The brothers built a chain of shops until 1960, owned 300 stores, and divided the operation into two separate groups, later became Alde Nord, based in Essen; and Aldi Sood, based in nearby Mulheim. Both parties operate independently, each within distinct geographical areas. Both of which are the largest privately owned companies in the world.
