The company was founded by George Dayton and headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, June 1902 before it was named Dayton Dry Goods Company in 1903 and then Dayton Company in 1910.

The first target store was opened in Roseville, Minnesota in 1962 while the name of the parent company Dayton was changed in 1967.
